Irigaray offers the clearest available introduction to her own work. Focusing on power, women, gender and patriarchal mythologies, she lays out what for her has become the central problem for women in the modern world.

In Je, Tu, Nous (1990) Irigaray tries the new tack of creating a gender intersubjectivity that would allow for the mutually beneficial exchange of sexual and gender differences. The key here as Irigaray sees it was implied by the title of an earlier book, This Sex Which is Not One, namely that men must acknowledge women as gender equals. To bring this about Irigaray insists that the entire corpus of negative imagery as implied by the theories of patriarchal repositories of authority like Freud, Hegel, Marx, and Lacan must be foregrounded into the collective male consciousness such that feminists (like Irigaray) could playfully and even mockingly point out their accumulated foibles.
