This is the first travel book about Europe by a South Asian. In 1766 Mirza Sheikh I'tesamuddin, an official of the Mughal court, embarked on a voyage to England in the company of Captain Swinton of the East India Company to deliver a letter from Mughal emperor Shan Alam to the English monarch. The entire trip lasted nearly three years. I'tesamuddin describes what he sees and experiences with candor and a freshness of perception that makes this book a landmark in the literature about the encounter of East and West.
